George Santucci
- Sustainability and Special Projects Manager
- Town of Boone
George Santucci is Boone’s first Sustainability and Special Projects Manager. Boone has a strong commitment to sustainable practices and has committed to climate neutrality in municipal operations by 2030. To achieve this goal as well as ensuring renewable energy for the entire town by 2050, Boone hired Santucci in January of 2021. As of Feb 2022, all the electricity used in town facilities comes from 100% renewable resources.
Santucci comes to Boone with a strong environmental and river conservation background. From 2005-2020, Santucci was the executive director of the New River Conservancy. Prior to that, he worked in outdoor experiential education with NC Outward Bound, 4-H, and as an adjunct instructor at Appalachian State University. Santucci also served on the NC Mountain Resources Commission from 2009-2013.
Santucci completed Boone’s first comprehensive GHG inventory and Community Climate Action Plan. He is now greening energy sources, installing solar on town facilities, electrifying the town’s fleet, increasing public EV charging, electrifying fuel heat systems in town buildings, reducing flooding by improving stormwater infrastructure, and improving water quality through stream restoration projects.
